In the last 4 years, I've worked as a call centre rep, tradesman, sales clerk, finance analyst and now, a software engineer. With such an impressive track record of bouncing around jobs, I'm not exactly the kind of model kid that your parents would be gushing over at the dinner table. However, my time spent with all the above contributed to the process of finding a life defined by myself and not by what mum/dad/friends/family/school expected of me.
Of course, certain financial and social responsibilities will always guide the majority of career decisions we make. Yet for many of us ABCs [Australian-born Chinese people] where choice is a luxury we can enjoy, I believe there's great value in acting "selfishly" and exploring options that we wouldn't traditionally consider.
