A friend of mine had just moved to Australia from Spain and was very interested in what other cultures had to offer. We frequently shared discussions on our passions of other cultures and desire to speak other languages. One day, he came over saying that he had just eaten the best Chinese tapas! I was very intrigued by this new fusion yet somewhat foreign concept and asked him to elaborate on what it was… to which he replied, “you know.. the little dumplings!”
I paused for a few moments still unsure as to what he was describing, only to realise a few moments later that he was talking about the very familiar Sunday family staple that I grew up on… dim sum! He had taken what he understood to be tapas, and added an eastern flavour, literally. Looking back on this rather comical memory, I can only embrace the creativity that comes when two cultures are combined.
