Issue One: Balance

When I was in kindergarten, I had brought in Hokkien noodles for lunch. A girl in my class stood up, pointed and screamed, “She’s eating worms for lunch! Ewww!” I cried and didn’t touch the noodles. I remember from then on, I would ask my mum to make me sandwiches for lunch instead. I just wanted to fit in like the rest of my classmates. This was one of the many struggles of figuring out the balance of embracing my Chinese-Malaysian identity and how that fit into the western world I was growing up in. Don’t worry... as I got to high school I gladly brought in my Asian lunches and enjoyed them thoroughly.
